Every manuscript needs proofreading before it goes out, however many times the author has read it. A second reader sees what the first no longer can: the doubled word, the name spelled two ways, the date that changed between chapters.
Publishers who hire freelancers often start with an editing test. A short passage with planted errors shows more about a candidate than a CV, and it takes less time to mark than an interview takes to run.
Some of our writers work from a cottage for the summer, with slow internet and a long drive to the nearest town. They send chapters in batches, and we send them back marked up the same week.
What to try
